How to choose the best mattress
Six points to find the right mattress for you and for Puerto Rico’s climate.
1. By sleep position
- Side sleepers: look for a plush to medium mattress, like memory foam or a hybrid, that relieves pressure on shoulders and hips.
- Back sleepers: medium or medium-firm keeps your spine aligned.
- Stomach sleepers: a firm mattress keeps your hips from sinking.
- Combination sleepers: a medium hybrid gives support and makes it easy to move.
2. Pick the material
- Memory foam: contours to your body and reduces motion transfer if you share the bed. Examples: Ashley Sleep Memory Foam and Nectar.
- Hybrid: combines coils and foam layers for support and comfort. Examples: Beautyrest® Hybrid and Dellyn Hybrid.
- Innerspring: cooler and bouncier, and a budget-friendly option. Example: Dellyn Bonnell.
3. Think about Puerto Rico’s heat
With the island’s heat and humidity, temperature matters. Look for cooling technology like Simmons DualCool™ or gel foams, choose a hybrid if you sleep hot, and use a breathable mattress protector.
4. The right base
Use a box spring, bunkie board or adjustable base that works with your mattress. An adjustable base, like Simmons Blogic, lets you raise your head or feet by remote control.
5. Take the comfort test
The best way to choose is to lie down for a few minutes in your normal sleep position. At Berríos stores you can try Simmons, Ashley Sleep and more, and ask about Berríos Credit to finance your purchase.
6. When should you replace your mattress?
Most mattresses last 7 to 10 years. It is time for a new one if it sags, squeaks, you wake up with back pain, or you sleep better away from home.
